Maybe this is Lounge, maybe it isn't. But unlike most other knowledge work professions, I suspect the typical developer spends most of their time sitting down. I know I do. (Even more than when I was a writer.)
And for a while, I was confused as to why most of the older developers stayed standing. (We have desks that go up and down.) I'm less confused now. My back has been aching for months, maybe longer.
I recently started going to the gym, which has made me pay closer attention to specific body parts. Good lord my back is weak. Both lower and middle. So, so weak when it used to be the opposite. It aches at the end of every day, and all I've done is sit in a chair! So I've been paying attention.
My posture is bad, and has always been bad. I sit like a child, with one leg folded up underneath me, alternating legs when one goes to sleep. This cocks your hips awkwardly, making your back S-shaped. First one way, and then the other. It's subtle, but over years you notice it. It can't be good.
Starting yesterday, I made a concerted effort to sit with both feet (more or less) on the floor, and my back against the back of my chair instead of slouched over. Yesterday I had much less pain in my back when I went home. The difference was marked. I expected there to be a difference, but I didn't expect it right away.
I still need to get these dual monitors set up right. Even the small difference in posture has made them off-kilter in an annoying way. I did one round of adjustments yesterday, I'll need to do another today, otherwise my neck is ever-so-slightly cocked to one side or the other, which is also painful.
